Emily Van Buren
Age: 31
Location: Oakland, California
Occupation: AI Analyst
Companion: Chiquita, a tabby cat
Notable Skills: Software engineering, tools, former girl scout, and former track and field athlete
After 10 years working as an AI Analyst at a big tech company in the Bay Area, she suddently found herself unemployed after a new round of layoffs.
She was still processing the shock when the first reports of violent attacks began appearing online. At first it looked like scattered incidents, people running through streets, biting strangers, attacking police.
Within days, cities like Oakland began to shut down.
Emily escaped the chaos with only what she could carry and one small companion, her cat, Chiquita, whom she transports in a crate as she moves between temporary shelters.
Surviving in a dense city won’t be easy, people are turning fast. Emily’s greatest strengths are her sharp intelligence and her ability to run as fast as the infected. There’s just one complication: carrying a cat everywhere doesn’t make survival any easier.
Follow Emily’s letters to learn what’s really happening.

Kenny Lujan
Age: 40
Location: Cibola County, New Mexico
Occupation: Drone Repair
Companion: Maggie, a blue heeler dog
Notable Skills: Offgrid systems, hunting, hand-to-hand combat, car and drone repair
Kenny Lujan has spent most of his life far from cities.
After a recent divorce, he moved out to the edge of civilization and began living a mostly off-grid life, where quiet nights and long stretches of empty land suited him just fine. Solitude didn’t bother Kenny. In many ways, he preferred it.
He works as a drone repairman, a trade that keeps him familiar with electronics, mechanics, and the delicate art of making complicated machines work again. When something breaks, Kenny usually figures out how to fix it.
But his skills go far beyond tools and circuit boards.
Years ago, Kenny trained in hand-to-hand combat, a discipline that taught him patience, awareness, and how to stay calm when situations turn dangerous. Living in rural country also made him an excellent hunter and tracker, comfortable moving through rough terrain and reading the land.
And if a vehicle ever needs to move quickly under less-than-ideal circumstances…
Kenny can hot-wire just about anything with an engine.
These days his only constant companion is a young blue heeler puppy named Maggie, energetic, loyal, and often the only bright spot in long, uncertain days.
Kenny doesn’t know exactly what’s happening to the world yet.
But he knows one thing for sure:
Whatever comes next, he and Senna are going to survive it.
